What is this program all about?
THIS IS ME is a program for schools designed to empower youth, giving them a chance to reflect on, share, and act on ideas that emerge from their own stories. Through the process of journaling about their own story, THIS IS ME is designed to increase youths' insight into self, feelings of connection to their peers and, and to create protection in exploring topics such as: identity, culture, empathy, self-compassion, and social justice. THIS IS ME uses a web based app that allows participants to engage in guided video journaling exercises. The video journaling exercises are paired with a curriculum designed to reinforce self- awareness, self- management and self efficacy. As a whole, the THIS IS ME program aims to promote mental wellness in youth.
-
Why was THIS IS ME developed?
In the fall of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic led students to shelter in place from school and peers, suicide prevention expert, Dr. Jenn Stuber and award winning filmmaker, Dr. Rick Stevenson, realized students needed a way to both process what was going on in the world around them and to feel safe and connected. Dr. Stevenson, who has successfully been empowering youth through verbal journaling for years, decided this could be a great way to virtually engage students. The combination of Dr. Stuber’s expertise in mental health and suicide prevention and Dr. Stevenson’s expertise in storytelling led to the creation of the Student Voices Project. During the 2020-2021 academic year, 92 students from schools across Washington State, Canada, Mexico, and Australia, participated in our verbal journaling program. Due to the success of this initial pilot project, This Is Me was created.
-
Does it cost anything to be involved in the THIS IS ME program?
The web app used in the video journaling exercises costs approximately $25 per student. THIS IS ME also has operational costs associated with providing support for the web app, a Safety Officer to follow up with schools on flagged words of concern in the transcripts of students’ videos, and for hosting the international film festival. The cost per student will vary depending on the overall number of students participating in the program. We are working to limit costs to schools to $25 per student offsetting these other costs with gifts from private philanthropy. Cost should not be a barrier to participation for any school or community organization to participate. Please reach out if you are interested.

Can my teen participate in the THIS IS ME program without it being in their school?
Unfortunately, not at the moment. The program is designed to be rolled out in the context of a classroom environment or a group setting to get maximum utilization of the verbal journaling exercises. We also want to ensure your students’ safety. Not that THIS IS ME poses any risk to participants. It doesn’t. THIS IS ME has built-in, keyword technology that can pick up anything the student says that suggests they may be in danger. We need to have a way to follow-up with students we are concerned about and that protocol exists within your school/ organization. Currently, we are offering THIS IS ME to a small cohort of youth who are helping us to refine the program. If this is something you think your student would be interested in, please reach out today.
